A potential mass shooting was prevented at Prophet Elijah Orthodox Church in Ellensburg, Washington when 27-year-old Alexander Ziyad Mueller of Moses Lake entered during services while about 50 people were present. Reporting citing court documents says concern escalated after Mueller’s wife allegedly made statements threatening to shoot people inside. Churchgoers, including a retired law enforcement officer and an off-duty officer, intervened before the situation escalated further.

Authorities responded and, according to police, found a fully automatic AR-15 and dozens of rounds of ammunition in Mueller’s SUV in the church parking lot. A Glock 9mm handgun and a small quantity of ammunition were also recovered from Mueller. Prosecutors stated the incident “was very close to a mass shooting”, and a priest reportedly visited the couple’s home two days earlier for a blessing and observed concerning behavior.

Court reporting indicates the wife told police she has mental health conditions and had not been taking her medications, and she was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Mueller was taken into custody and booked into the Kittitas County Jail, with reporting indicating $1 million bail.

What this means: The incident underscores that church services can face fast-developing armed threats, and that immediate on-scene intervention by capable congregants can be decisive when threats are made inside a sanctuary.

ANKAWA, IRAQ – On March 4, 2026, a missile or drone attack near Erbil sent debris that damaged Chaldean Catholic Church-managed residential buildings in Ankawa and landed near a convent housing nuns. Multiple explosions were reported and no casualties were reported.

DENGASORGI, INDIA – On March 3, 2026, a small Catholic mission station chapel in Dengasorgi village, Rayagada district, Odisha, India, was vandalized, with sacred items burned and the building damaged. Local Catholic families reported fear during a mob gathering, and police conducted a response and inquiry that resulted in an understanding allowing Christians to continue worship.

KOZHIKODE, INDIA – A fire was set at a religious study centre attached to St. Patrick’s Church near the railway station in Kozhikode, causing partial damage to the building and to a car belonging to the parish priest. Police arrested a suspect from Odisha in connection with the incident.

BUKIT MERTAJAM, MALAYSIA – Police in Penang arrested a man in his 20s allegedly linked to threats against independent preacher Zamri Vinoth after Zamri filed a report. Authorities are investigating an incident in which multiple individuals approached Zamri’s vehicle and it was involved in a collision, as shown in a video he posted.

HARMONY, UNITED STATES – An Iredell County sheriff’s deputy detained and arrested a man accused of dismantling air conditioning units at Holly Springs Baptist Church in Harmony after a short foot pursuit. The suspect faces charges including felony larceny and felony injury to real property.

LINCOLN, UNITED STATES – Lincoln police reported a burglary at a church in LINCOLN, NEBRASKA on March 6, 2026. A suspect was taken into custody.

GARNER, UNITED STATES – A hazardous device described as a PVC pipe bomb was found and destroyed at Capital Church in Garner, North Carolina in late February 2026. Police arrested and charged Christopher McMullen in connection with the incident, and said they have no reason to believe the church or congregation was specifically targeted.

SAN FRANCISCO, UNITED STATES – San Francisco Police Department officers responded to reports of antisemitic and homophobic graffiti, including swastikas, vandalizing a church and nearby city utilities on the 2800 block of California Street. A suspect was arrested and booked on multiple charges including felony vandalism with a hate crime enhancement, with damage estimated to exceed $20,000.

HARDWICK, UNITED KINGDOM – In June 2025, a man threatened to kill another man inside St Mary’s Church in Hardwick, England after being asked to leave following reports of aggressive behavior toward women. Police said the same man later performed an indecent act in front of a woman at a bus stop and fled when a member of the public intervened.
